What do we mean by ‘Wellbeing’?

At City and Hackney Mind, we aim to focus on the concept of wellbeing and to better grasp what constitutes wellness and wellbeing for each individual client we serve. Our working concept of wellbeing is about having meaning in life, about fulfilling our potential and feeling that our lives are worthwhile.

The evidence shows that one’s sense of wellbeing is enhanced by:

good relationships,

the company of friends,

rewarding work,

financial security,

a good diet,

physical activity,

sound sleep,

engaging leisure and religious or spiritual belief and practice

Optimism, trust, self-respect and autonomy make us happier. Gratitude and kindness lift our spirits; indeed, giving support can be at least as beneficial as receiving it. Having clear goals that we can work towards, a ‘sense of place’ and belonging, a coherent and positive view of the world, and the belief that we are part of something bigger than ourselves all foster wellbeing.

All in all, wellbeing comes from being connected and engaged, from being enmeshed in a web of relationships and interests. These give meaning to our lives. We are deeply social beings. The intimacy, belonging and support provided by close personal relationships seem to matter most, and isolation exacts the highest price. The overarching goal of City and Hackney Mind is to fight against the isolation too often experienced by our clients and to offer appropriate and effective interventions at each step of the journey toward wellness and recovery.

Traumatic Stress Counselling

Are you experiencing any of the symptoms below? They are known to be normal reactions to highly stressful or traumatic events:

  • Pictures about it pop into your head?
  • Sudden strong emotions when you are reminded of what happened?
  • Hypervigilence – are you always on guard?
  • You have dreams about what happened?
  • Do you avoid things that remind you of what happened?
  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep because of pictures from your past that come into your head?
  • Do you feel as if it hadn’t happened or it wasn’t real?
  • You try not to think about it?

If you are experiencing any of the above, then we can probably help you.

Confidential, professional yet funded trauma counselling can often overcome these effects of trauma, in a short number one on one meetings.
