Employment Service for Clients

We currently take referrals from any agency operating in Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Corporation of London (The City). We also take self-referrals. When contact is made or a referral form is received, we reply within three days by telephoning and writing a letter to confirm an appointment for initial assessment. All new clients have an initial assessment that identifies their goals and needs. After this, we can provide a tailored service to suit each individual. The work of the Employment Service is currently funded by grants from Hackney Social Services, The Big Lottery, Henry Smith Charity and through the London Development Agency's Opportunities Fund. The services we provide include:

Skills Training

As part of the 'Pathways to Employment' project (funded by the London Development Agency) the Employment Service offers two skills training courses:

Introduction to Computing (Access to New Clait): a 10-week course aimed at providing students with IT skills that are used in a wide range of occupations and that will help to facilitate successful job search activities. Modules include: file management, word processing, creating spreadsheets, on-line research and use of Email.

Basic Skills at Work: a 10-week course aimed at developing students literacy skills to enable them to successfully apply for employment and training opportunities and to operate within a work based environment. Modules include: CV writing, form filing, Health and Safety at work, company communications and formal writing.

Job-search Workshops

The workshops cover creating CVs, education enrolment, volunteering, recreational activities, transferable skills, job specifications, person specifications, covering letters and applications, selling yourself, work experience/placements, internet jobsites, newspapers, agencies, interview preparation, interview technique, sales skills, personal effectiveness, relationship building, time management, prioritising, presentation, interview attire, salary negotiations and references.

Entering Paid employment, volunteering or work placement

We support clients in finding either voluntary or paid work. This work can be full or part time, or we can help people to start a further education course.

When our clients start work, the employment advisor and client can create an action plan that includes triggers, warning signs, advance directives if necessary, client support, timetable for contact, employer support (if appropriate) career goals, coping strategies and work/life balance. This support is not limited to a certain amount of time - it is for as long as the client wishes it.

Work Retention

Support for those who are currently employed, on sick leave, facing discrimination or have mental health needs which are having an effect upon their job. This service is currently available to Hackney residents only.
