Living Well with Depression
Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

RECOGNISE THIS?

Feeling low or sad a lot of the time?
Having trouble eating or sleeping?
Finding you are eating or sleeping too much?
Feeling anxious or agitated without really knowing why?
Feeling life is not treating you very well?
Being tired, lacking in energy?
Finding you don’t want to see people or make the effort to do things?

These are some of the signs of stress and depression – particularly if things have been this way for sometime.

There is something that can help.
City and Hackney Mind are running a 10 week course to help with stress, and depression

What does the course offer?
Through a variety of exercises and meditations, the course helps you recognize and notice unhelpful habits which can contribute to feelings of stress, and low mood. We then explore different helpful ways of relating to what is happening, and practice developing new habits and choices.

All exercises and meditations will be taught on the course, and therefore no previous experience is necessary of either meditation or CBT. You will be given CDs for home practice. We suggest that you put aside regular time, each day, to practice the exercises and meditations.
These simple meditations are called mindfulness practices, and are ways of becoming more aware of how our thinking affects our experience. They are not religious meditations, and are suitable for all.

The course is suitable for participants who are currently not suffering from chronic depression and can make a commitment to attend the course on a weekly basis. The course is most helpful if you can attend weekly

Who will lead the course?
The course will be led by Erica Light, an experienced course leader and bereavement counsellor and Gwen Williams who is a counsellor with City and Hackney Mind.

What does the course cost?
The course is funded and is free to City and Hackney residents who are unemployed; we are asking all participants for a £10   contribution upon registration to help towards the cost of CDs and handouts that we will give you for home practice. For those who are working the fee is £50 for the entire course.

Where and when will it be held?
The course will be held at City and Hackney Mind
8 – 10 Tudor Road, London E9 7SN

The course runs every Monday evening from the 13th October to the 8th December 2008, with a follow up session on Monday 12th January 2009 from 6.30 to 9.00pm.
