Appropriate Adult Service

Our Appropriate Adult service contributes to a multi-agency solution in conjunction with Social Services, Youth Offending and the Metropolitan Police.

The service supports vulnerable people being detained in police custody ensuring that they understand their rights and police procedures during their detention. The project aims to reduce the pressures of this work on social work and community mental health teams and allows a single point of access for the police to contact appropriate adults, therefore reducing the time that they spend in police custody.

Project Aims

  • To protect vulnerable people being detained in police custody.
  • To ensure that vulnerable people in police custody understand their rights and entitlements.
  • To explain police procedures to vulnerable people being detained.
  • To facilitate communication between the detained person and the police service.
  • To advice and assist detainees about non legal matters where appropriate.
  • To provide an appropriate adults service through trained volunteers.
